Learn Conversational Bosnian Words and Phrases

When having a conversation in Bosnian, there are some words and expressions one might hear from time to time. In Bosnian, the phrase “Molim Vas, sedite” [Молим Bас, сједите] translates as “please sit down.” When a person says “Izvinite me” [Извините ме] this means “excuse me” and “On je tih” [он је тих] means “he is quiet.”

Someone that states “Dobro sam, a Vi? [Добро сам, а Bи?] is stating “I am fine and you?” and if the person wanted to say “niece” then the person could use “sestričina” [сестричина] to say this.

In Bosnian, to say “friend” (masculine) one could state “prijatelj” [пријатељ] and to say “friend” (feminine) the word “prijateljica” [пријатељица] could be used. A person stating “business man” could state “poslovni čovek” [пословни човек] while someone who wants to say “poslovna žena“ [пословна жена] would be saying “business woman.”

When saying “they are children” the speaker might say “Oni su dijeca” [они су дијеца] and if the speaker says “buka” [бука] then the person is saying “noise.” If one hears “On je smiješan” [Oн је смијешан] this would mean “he is funny.” The sentence “Autobus je spor” [аутобус је спор] translates as “the bus is slow.”

A person who wants to say “books” could say “ knjige” [књиге] and to say “books are important” the speaker might say “Knjige su bitne” [књиге су битне]. In Bosnian, to tell someone “the watch is new” the phrase “Sat je nov” [Сат је нов] can be used. If the speaker wants to say “here is my passport” then the translation of this is “Evo mog pasoša [Ево мог пасоша].

An individual who wishes to say “the flight is on time” might use “Let je na vrijeme” [Лет је на вријеме] and to tell a person “Želim ti prijatan let“ [Желим ти пријатан лет] would be saying “have a good flight.” A person saying “Gdјe je kupatilo?” [Гдје је купатило?] would be saying “where is the bathroom.” To say “can you repeat please?” the speaker could say “Možeš li ponoviti molim te?” [Можеш ли поновити молим те?].
